our first harvest

And here's our first little harvest. Just enough to make a delightful salad to go with dinner last night. There's baby lettuce, asparagus, radishes, a spring onion, and turnip greens.

And although I didn't go out there barefoot to pick all this, (there ARE fire ants, after all) it was rather idyllic to take my bowl and go out in the dusk and select my vegetables from the side yard. After a weekend spent with strep throat (note to self, not something to be handled without medical assistance), it was balm to my frazzled soul to go out and bring in the first little harvest.

Oh and, this is planting week, yes? We're all so excited. Let's see...tomatoes, corn, okra, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, herbs, beans, squash, watermelon...

What about you? Planting anything?

Um, sorta. No veggies because I live in what's considered in Rexburg to be a high rise apartment. But I am doing window boxes chucked full of wave petunias. It still might be just a titch cold though, so that's not until next week. Oh, and I'm thinking about starting an teeny little container herb garden. Those just seem so shabby chic, you know?

Well, that's still kind of up in the air. Born without your proverbial green thumb, I have the ability to, for example, care for a tiny African violet for a solid year, watching it get huge, then kill it within a week of seemingly identical care. Yes, I am the rare black thumb - worse than the brown thumb since I can take plants that are seriously thriving and kill them pretty quickly. It makes following the prophets' advice about gardening seem very difficult, and is the source of too much mirth for my mean husband. Maybe I'll find some sturdy herbs that can take a beating and plant those. I hear birds don't eat rosemary - and it's more of a bush. Hmm.

It's been snowing in Orem. It feels very much like winter this week. I was surprised to see that you already have things growing in your garden, but then again you do live much further south. When did you start planting?

By the way, I love wave petunias. I'm going to plant some too.

We started planting...mid February, I think. Only stuff that can take freezes, though, since it isn't supposed to get THAT warm until this week.

Wave petunias are pretty. I had to pinch back a whole greenhouse full once, which kinda soured me on them, I think. I was covered with petunia glue for a week. Long as you don't have to pinch them, hey, they're nice!
